Friendly reminder about Fire Safety!

Just want to give everyone a reminder that they should check and test all of their smoke / CO detectors as well as check any fire extinguishers in your house. Also now is a great time to pickup any of those you might be missing or are old. Never felt the need for a fire extinguisher? You should have at least one on every floor in a central location or near primary sources of fire (such as a kitchen).

I say all this because I recently had to use a fire extinguisher for the first time in my life because someone cooked some coconut a little too hot…

Accidents happen, but its good to spend a few extra dollars to be prepared just in case… And yes, there were probably other ways to deal with the fire but that was the quickest option without increasing the risk of it spreading.

Sorry if this type of post isn’t allowed, I know a lot of people probably don’t even think about having a fire extinguisher in the home but as just recently having to use one figured I’d spread some encouragement to pick one (or more) up!

i did it towards the end of the day cycle for points so hopefully I get those sweet sweet reply points spread out over multiple days… :slight_smile:

Beside these fire extinguisher you need a so called “fire blanket” which is great to kill burning oil in a pan. This has to be mounted near the cooker of course.

And don’t forget these extinguisher have to be checked and refilled from time to time.

Baking soda will work for this :+1:

Only baking soda or salt, do NoT try and use flour or baking power.

Do you really think when a burning pan is shocking you in your kitchen you will seek for baking soda?

Hmmm obvs someone cooking but not watching.

Maybe cos of my training, but I’d never grill without watching it, and never fry without being present.

You’re lucky this didn’t escalate.
A decent OPTICAL smoke detector is a must. Pay the extra for optical… WHY? Optical doesn’t sound every time you burn toast, or frying (and watching) or boil the kettle. Optical looks at the smoke and decided it’s heat n thickness before going mental!

Living in an apartment, with only 1 exit (jumping out first floor* window not really an option due to health) we are quite conscious of hazards.

Came here just to say this. People need to know that putting out any oil or grease based fire with water is a HUGE no no. If you do not have a fire extinguisher on hand, always follow these rules/steps

• Turn the Heat Off – Don’t try to move the pot. You might accidentally splash yourself or your kitchen with burning oil. And that would be bad.
• Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid – Fire cannot exist in the absence of oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire should quickly consume all the oxygen and put itself out. Use a metal lid since glass will shatter.
• Pour on Baking Soda – Baking soda will extinguish grease fires, but only if they’re small. It takes a lot of baking soda to do the job.
• Spray the Pot with a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher – This is your last resort, as fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen. Still, it’s better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.
• Get Out and Call 911 – If the fire does break out of control, don’t try to be a hero. Get out and find a phone to call 911.

We had one of this smoke detectors in our kitchen.
No more possibility to grill Bratwurst. :persevere:
Always an alarm.
Deinstalled.
Better to stay in the kitchen.
And a smoke detector is not able to decide:
“Bratwurst ready” :grin:

Yea you aren’t supposed to have a smoke detector in the kitchen or adjacent to the kitchen. The number of false alarms can train people to ignore smoke detectors. Not good!

I do love bratwurst but sometimes can be too peppery/spicy.

When we have the “German market” in the center at Christmas, I’ll often have a brat then, as the brothers Lidl n Aldi aren’t close to me and normal shops charge more for them, I’ll treat myself at Christmas time.

I get Johnsonville bratwurst, because it’s the only good kind you can get in the US. There original sausage isn’t spicy at all.

One thing I’m really jealous of @Chiquinho about is the bratwurst he gets to eat :confused:
