Good share.
Ill be moving to Android full time soon so thats good to know.
ps I’ve also followed you @MacBlank i thought i already was, but obviously not.
I am almost full time Android, I need to keep a Linux laptop going as it’s part of being able to do Android “unbrick” ADB. I have my pocket Android OnePlus 6, my small tablet Huawei Mediapad 8.4, larger 10.8 and three WearOS watches. I also keep a small Arm Linux server as basically my NAS.
One of the reasons is battery life and portability, all my devices have LTE and USB charging.
I have been on Android since 2012, my first device Nexus 7, then Nexus 4.
I don’t actually like Android, I think Linux is best, issues like Chrome tab refresh, it’s the price you pay for to get all the hardware. Using Userland I have Linux full desktop on my largest Android device.
I’ve had an iPhone since the 4 in 2010.
I tried the 11 pro and just didn’t feel the hype when i got it, plus i had significant camera flare issues.
Sent that back and am waiting for the new Galaxy S11/20 to come out.
I don’t think i could part with my iPad though, Andriod tablets just don’t see to be up there when it comes to compatible apps.
The hardware is apparently good, just the app support seems to be lacking (so ive read)
You are correct that Android lacks on a larger screen device, things like running landscape mode is still icky. Google, who own Android really gave up on Android for tablets some years ago, focusing on ChromeOS for its larger devices, and Android is being championed by primarily Samsung and then Huawei. Google has the Pixel chromebook as its larger device champion.
Apple watch is also superior to Wear OS.
However, there are things in Android space which is not in Apple. My tablets are actually phone chipsets, with a phone SIM, so I have a 10.8" keyboard+trackpad phone. If any other device you either to have Wifi-only or buy a tablet data SIM which has less data for higher cost. Now in winter, I’m always outside wearing a coat, so my phone is 8.4", that size gives me better battery life, better speakers, paired with a Fossil Gen 5 Wear OS so I get notifications without the 8.4" phone nearby, is a workable system.
Look up
Which forces apps into landscape mode, which you will want if you get a keyboard
And Userland
Which is as small, or big, Linux on your Android device, so you can turn an Android portrait mode into a Linux desktop. Not for everyone but it fills a fill holes / weaknessses in Android.
Hey @TechMan
Everything i read pointed to hardware and a chat with Apple concluded in its not a hardware “fault” but lens flare is a problem caused by shooting toward light with a camera.
After i explained and showed them identical shots i took with an iPhone 8, iPad Pro, Galaxy S5 and S10 and a DSLR and didn’t get the issue they pretty much repeated their words.
Ill miss the iPhone, but this time round i felt just a bit “meh” when it was delivered (probably as the iPhone 8 i had was still a good phone).
So thought id give someone else my money this time round. I have a few colleagues that rave about their Galaxy S10 so thought id give the new Galaxy a year and see how i get on.
Probably just an Apple rep who didn’t know what they were talking about. The lens flare on the 11 pro is a known issue, and definitely software. Other brands have fixed via software updates
Of the S11/20 is as good as the S10, or even (I know it’s backwards) the S8, it’ll be a good phone.
I mention S8, as that was the previous big improvement that brought me back to Samsung… Previously had Sony phones, as previous galaxy’s were shit n unreliable.
Didn’t think I’d get anything better than an S8, but here I am, almost a year later with my S10+, and still absolutely loving it.
Whatever they done, they got just right. I hope in 2byears when time to look at my next phone, Sam have come out with another cracker
Sadly, Sam don’t always manage to bring out a great phone after an already great phone. Seems to be every other year/model!
Mind there are big hope nin android for the next Samsung
I pay $5 a month to add it to my unlimited plan. When I had my Apple Watch with cellular I payed $5 a month to add it to my unlimited plan, and it was an actual phone line.
Not sure why I would ever need to make a phone call from my iPad…
Hi @professor
My iPad use is pretty much web based or Amazon and on Wi-Fi, very rarely i would tether to my phone for a bit of data.
Probably best to stick with it for now.
That varies by plan and network. T-Mobile USA for example, data line was more expensive per unit of data, in fact adding a 4th phone line was free but adding a data line was $20/month. But if on your plan, if you got it for $5/month then your decision was logical.
Hey @MacBlank
I’m glad you’re loving the S10.
I think as manufacturers are keen to pump out a new device every year they struggle for ideas/improvements.
I found that with the old IPhones, Apple had a run of introducing a “S” model (iPhone 5, then 5 s etc) and the “s” had minimal differences but it kept people spending money!
I’ve been using a Galaxy S5 for the past month so looking forward to getting the new one in Feb / Mar!
