A very important item!
Win Big for Your Best Work From Home Hacks
Turned my living room gaming pc into a work-from-home powerstation at my kitchen table. I have had to upgrade about everything but the table over the last year.
My work home from hacks starts with going to the gym to get the blood flowing, come home shower, drink my protein shake, and right before I start working, I turn on some smooth jazz.
Iāve been working from home exclusively for the past year now. I often find myself āin the flowā and I forget to take breaks and/or work too late. As a result, I wasnāt moving around enough or getting enough sunshine. I expanded my garden substantially last year, and that gives me motivation to take short 10 to 15 minute breaks every couple hours to go out and water the plants, pull weeds, and get some sunshine/fresh air. During the winter, when I couldnāt get outside as much, I got a motorized standing deskā¦ and thatās been a game changer as it keeps me from sitting too long as well.
The other thing, was taking the time to turn a spare bedroom into a dedicated office, with a soothing paint color. And then bringing in a few items/collectibles that spark joy. With the biggest ājoy sparkerā being a giant 8ā by 4ā vinyl poster that I had printed from a photo I took a few years back of pro skater Christian Hosoi shredding a skatepark bowl in sunny Palm Springs, California. It really brightens my workspace and glancing over at it can be energizing whenever I start feeling tired/burned out in the afternoons
Some plants, good ambient lighting (window, screen bar, lamps, or other non-overhead lights), and a clean and organized space make working from home much less stressful.
Honestly it may seem simple but the biggest hack for me is just going to bed early so I actually wake up before my work alarm. Really helps me feel able to handle the day, and that extra rest helps make up for the focus lost by being at home.
Since being laid off due to COVID, I have simple hope-to-work-from-home-soon hacks:
ā stay hydrated
ā maintain my exercise routine
ā keep junk snacks out of the house
ā send in at least one job app per day
ā remain grateful for having a stable financial situation
ā work to be particularly kind; these days, a thoughtful word (or a moment of silent forgiveness) can make all the difference to someone who is really struggling
Biggest hack for me, not sure it us a hack but improves my workā¦is stay out of the kitchen except at set meal timesā¦ another hack is to freeze half a bottle of water sideways, then fill it with cold water. It then stays cold for hours so I donāt go into kitchen or leave my desk to get more water. Itās cold for hours
Love this contest. Sadly I missed the fails contest, I would have had a good one for that. Anyways, I have a few hacks that I would love to share:
-
Get a high resolution monitor! 1440p monitors arenāt expensive any more and mine reduced eye-strain a lot. For gaming 1080p is mostly enough but reading a lot of texts on a 1080p monitor is like looking without glasses and causes headaches.
-
If you like music, listen to music you donāt know. This helps me to stay positiv and curious.
-
Keep moving and do a little bit of sport. I got myself a 10$ gymnastic ball for some exercises I do in short 5 minute breaks. If you have the budget, get a standing desk or the legs for one. Using one would reduce the stress on the lower back!
-
Techtip for your eyes: Try to reduce glare on your screen. Glare and reflections can cause headaches!
-
Last thing that I would suggest is an adjustable office light. Warm light is cosy but cold light makes you more focused.
-
PRO TIP: if you do a lot of meetings and want to be heard and sound professional, get yourself a decent mic.
Hope I can help someone with these tips.
Iām really curious about that new ai powered webcam. Last thing I would need for my WFH setup
Cheers!
Chiptunes.
I love music, but anything with lyrics is a distraction that I just end up singing along with and taking me away from work. When I need to hunker down and work on something, an upbeat playlist of video game chiptune music brings up my energy levels (and mood along with it) and puts me in the zone to get stuff done.
Mine has to be wake up and once dressed go for a short walk outside. Get home and immediately start working, something about leaving the house, getting fresh air and then coming inside to work seems to help me differentiate between the place I sleep/relax and the place I work. I call it my morning commute but itās a whole lot faster than driving to the office and gets a few of my daily steps out of the way nice and early.
There are some other great ones here! For me the keys were:
Clean your desk and make your space look nice
Make good coffee
Get a good monitor
Check your posture
Lock the kid(s) out
Work from a park once in a while
Enjoy family from time to time during the day
Sometimes it can be beneficial to have an audio call, even via Zoom, so that you can walk around and focus on something farther away.
A sit/stand Laptop stand
Last one: move in with my family in Hawaii for a few months for free babysitting and more freedom to work in different places.
Thanks @AnkerOfficial for this lovely competition!
My biggest work from home hack is simple but lifechanging, especially for students and teachers!
Use Microsoft OneNote, it is a free office program where you can create, organize and share infinitely large digital workspaces where you can insert virtually anything. I am not kidding, you can insert spreadsheets, charts, images, PDFs, Wikipedia-Articles, videos, links, audio files and so much more! The interface is very intuitive, just click anywhere on the workspace and it will create a text box that you can drag and drop anywhere. You can also highlight important phrases and use stylus pens on tablets to draw or add handwritten text.
I am using it a lot for learning, it really is a gamechanger. Whenever we start a new topic, I create a new workspace and copy paste all relevant files and notes. Thatās literally it, if you need to study for this topic, you have all materials in one space, it cannot get any easier.
Thanks a lot for reading my hack. Hopefully I could make your work at home life more relaxing.
Make sure you are using good lighting with your camera for video conferencing and keep the bed made and clutter out of the way. Also once in a while, try cleaning the lens on the camera.
My best work from home hacks would be to keep your work setup separate from your normal day to day areas. This helps to keep you from feeling like everything is blended together which in turn keeps you on tasks specific to the time of day. I cannot tell you how many times I would continue to work because my setup was in my kitchen.
I dont know if this counts as a hack, but for me it is really important to stay organised. Detailed TODO lists and regularity in my schedule help a lot to stay productive.
Also not closing the blinds helps to be awake early, a pomodoro timer app is crucial and watching the really boring lectures at 1.5x does not only save time but also makes them more entertaining.
Iām gonna have to pass on this one since I donāt really work from home
My work from home hack has been more if a āwork from home while saving my backā kind of hack. I invested in a good chair as well as a simple back support for the longer hours spent in front of the computer. It has made a significant improvement in both my posture and pain that would normally accompany it.
My work from home hacks are mostly common sense. First make sure to get up and move often to get the blood flowing and to prevent blood clots and other health issues from sitting all day. Also, to give your eyes a break. Speaking of your eyes, using blue light filtering glasses or a blue light filter screen for your laptop to help with eye strain. Also, dress as comfortable as possible. #AnkerWork
This sounds like a great idea! Iām going to have to try it!
