Weekend activities! (old thread reanimated)

the first big snow of the year today. technically it’s the second snow here but the first was more a light dusting more than anything. Pretty cold too but almost refreshing to see some snow and how pretty some things look covered in fresh snow. Hope everyone is staying safe

Did you get more than a couple inches?

We have about 5 ft piles of snow on the sides of the roads, as they haven’t cleared yet only pushed to the side.

In doing so they’ve also shined up the road, so could play some shinny on the weekend…

Last couple days here of the deep freeze, oddly tropical in comparison for mid next week… lol🤪

I mean it wasn’t a whole lot but the 40mph wind was rough. I would say probably 4 inches by me which is nothing compared to your five feet for sure. The really rough part is the past two days now there has been crazy black ice everywhere. It was also enough to close public schools that people on my block work at…I think it was a premature call cause we were expected to get 6 inches initially but the number kept going down. I just got annoyed cause the weather people were like oh the second snow of the year when the first snow was a light dusting that melted in an hour after the sun came up.

5 ft is about 1,5 meters!

Not so much snow here.
But for me its enough.

Have to clean the pavement in front if the house and to feed the birds in their little house.
(many great tits around)

Do you like it?
I was born in the alps.
So I dislike winter and snow.
My whole childhood was “filled with a lot of snow”
and surrounded by high mountains.

In summer grey mountains in winter white ones.

Had to go to school - > 2 meters snow and sometimes -25C.

Now you know why I don’t like it .

Yea I like it. We don’t get snow often so I don’t see it year round. Besides they gave us tomorrow off lol.
I tried going to the store but there are two hills I couldn’t drive on so I had to go back.
Luckily we got groceries at home and we’ll be fine :+1:

Really cold is not difficult if you encounter it often - after all folks walk single handed to the south pole without dying - just equipment wisdom.

It is those who encounter unusually rare cold really suffer, don’t have the right clothing and infrastructure.

Not just individually but state. For example ice in New York’s airports is easily a non-issue, just de-ice the plane and take off. But I was in Houston once when the single de-icer was queued up and by the time you were de-iced and ready to leave you were already iced up again and so grounded. England is rarely that cold nor that hot so it grinds to a halt with a bit of snow.

It was supposed to snow tonight but now they think it will be rain and flood and then possibly turn to ice on Monday. I don’t mind the rain but really hoping for no ice

Lol yea we got plenty of snow! Hope you got a good weekend bro

In those days there was no special wear.

3 long underpants and 3 pullovers and an anorak.
That was all we got.
And those need to be undressed in school.

And then when going home needed to be dressed again

What a mess and fun!
BTW : I got a frozen nose and frozen hands from those times.
(sometimes frostbites show up on the hands, not funny at all)

Before written history, our species learned how to handle cold. So it’s just inexperience if you’re cold now. Places regularly cold have local shared knowledge so it’s just a matter of sharing advice.

Fashion, TV, and selling the idea you can wear summer clothes in winter has some part to play.

Unfortunately I have no more long underpants from the Bundeswehr! :grinning:
Great color : Nato green! -> Very fashionable and really so sexy!

Whats going on friends?

Am I the “cemetery gardener” now?

OK!
I can take care of the plants and water those.

And of course I got the perfect music for the family!

But it ends with some optimism. :grinning:

Hey Franz, we are still here.

A lazy weekend for us. Today Charlie’s football club started up after the Christmas break.
Charlie made flapjacks after lunch and tomorrow we have Debs aunt and uncle round.
