Screen protectors - share your experience

After five years of almost-completely protected cellphones, after some consideration, I’m rocking a “frontal nudity”: no screen protector. None at all. No tempered glass, no plastic film, nothing. Just the case.

I’ve used both plastic films and tempered glass before. What always bothered me was the fact that I couldn’t get past the awareness that it was there. Even with precisely applied plastic films on plain screens, but it got worse with our now ubiquitous curved glass screens. I with I could ignore it, but no. Since I’ve never had a broken screen, not even scratched, I’ve decided to go protector-free.

In these couple of weeks going without a screen protector, I noticed a few things:

  • The oleophobic coating of the glass screen protectors are way worse than the phone’s original screen is. I was used to cleaning smudges off my screen throughout the day. I barely do it now.
  • The screen feels different. There’s no noticeable difference in the touch sensibility, but there is a great one on the tact itself. My finger slides different over the phone’s screen that it did on the protector. The phone feels better.
  • Probably a consequence of the previous point, I now make more mistakes while typing. I guess my muscle memory was used to the friction on the glass screen protector and I’m still relearning. That said, I mostly use swype-to-type through Gboard, so most of the time it’s actually easier. The few times I have to really type - complicated names or words in other languages - I make more mistakes.

What are your thoughts? Do you use a protector? Has it ever paid off to use one - as in, you had to replace the protector but not the actual phone screen? Which brand do you use/recommend?

I have a protector, my phone is usually tossed in my pocket with my keys or a pocket knife, so my screen would die a quick death.

I always use a screen protector because it’s only a few bucks to protect a $600+ phone. The funny thing is, if the screen protector gets a scratch, I’m usually OK with it and I don’t bother replacing the protector even though the scratch always catches my eye. If it were the “real” screen, I would probably have a melt down if it got a small scratch. :joy:

I think I’ll always use a screen protector on my phone just because of my occupation. There’s a lot of dirt/lint and other little things that can get into my pockets with the phone and the last thing I want is to have a scratched screen.

Given that I’ve used screen protectors for as long as I can remember, I have no preference over using/not using one for the feeling of the screen.

Same goes for a case. If I’m spending £1k on a smart phone, it’s getting protected whether it looks better naked or not! :joy:

Cheap screen protectors do tend to scratch quite easily, but they are cheap and easily replaced. Screens on phones themselves… not so much.

Always used glass screen protectors since changing from a Nokia 3210 to my first smartphone. Like @TechnicallyWell said, it’s a small price to pay for an additional layer of protection of a $400 + phone. Based off the repair costs for the new iPhone X, with a out of warranty screen repair costing $249, even with some major scratches on the protector you’re still way, way, way better off and just have to buy another set of screen protectors. A case is a must too, just my take

Worth a watch to demonstrate…

I have always used tempered glass screen protectors, I don’t remember when they came out but I know I always had one. I also hated cases with the built in plastic protectors because how easily they scratched so I made sure to get glass. I am rough on my phones so having the added protection is worth it to me.

Hahaha. I would too!! I recently dropped my iPhone 6s on a flight of stairs, while carrying up laundry. I am so glad that I had an Anker GlassGuard on it. I now have 2 cracks on the upper right corner and lower left corner. The cracks do bug me at times but at least it’s not the original screen that’s cracked. Thanks Anker for protecting my iPhone 6s.

Yes. I have many reasons why, and alike from everyone’s it includes falling. 3 years ago I had a tracfone, the slide-up one and the plain one (don’t know what it’s called) and I went to NY Harbor school, I didn’t have the option of having a screen protector and both phones died swiftly. One by regular falling, the second by tumbling with me when I turned into a human pretzel from a bike.
My first ipod (years before) cracked 3 times before I was able to get a plastic case with a plastic screen protector.
And my phone now, after everything and every fall it’s been through with me, is protected because I invested in Anker screen protectors. Trust me, one day you will need it.

I’m rocking an Anker Tempered Glass Protector for my iPhone. I’d be so gutted if I scratched my screen. Gotta think of the resale value too. Makes a huge difference having a perfect screen.

I tried purchasing one and put it on incorrectly and it fell off within a day. Other than that have never used one and never shattered a device.

You named your screen protector Ann? Boss haha

Totally agree. That’s why I always have protection for my iPhone … GlassGuard and a case. Oh, and of course, I always keep my box. These things adds more value when you go to sale them later on. In all the years that I’ve upgraded my iPhone and sold the old ones off, I’ve been told many times by buyers that it’s pristine and that they chose my listing over others, even if it cost them a couple extra bucks.

As soon as my phone comes out of the box and screen protector and case goes on. I’m not careful with my phone but when it comes time for resale it’s in perfect condition.

I think a lot about the resale value, too. I just sold my iPhone 6 - encased and with glass protector since day one - in pristine condition and got a good value for it. It was then that I noticed my complete lack of screen damage in all those years, and what got me thinking.

But, of course, I had phone drops. The case on that iPhone 6 had a visible chirp in one corner from the most cringeworthy drop I had with the phone. It also fell screen first once and I was sure I would need to replace the screen protector, but everything was still pristine on that side.

I guess I’m still unsure about my decision, or I wouldn’t have started the topic…

my phone has a silicon protector and a glass screen protector because it always falls out of my hands, and sometimes I forget it, and when I carry it in my pocket I sit on top of it, fortunately, only the protective screen has always been broken :joy:
