PowerPort Atom PD 4 to charge mid 2015 MacBook Pro

I bought a PowerPort PD 4 to use with a USB-C to MagSafe-2 cable with my 15" MacBook Pro. I know the PD 4 should deliver 100W, and it was the only cable I was using so should have got the full 100W. However, it would not charge my MacBook, or charge for a few seconds and then stop and then start again. I returned the PD 4 but I really like it and wonder if it was just faulty. Anyone know if it should charge my MacBook Pro using a USB-C to Magsafe-2 cable? Oh I tried 3 different makes of USB-C to MagSafe-2 cable so ruled out the cable. Finally it charged my wife’s 2019 Macbook Pro with a USB-C to USB-C cable.

Was the Magsafe2 cable rated for 100W?

Only 100W cables will do 100W, the next level down is 60W, next level down is 10W.

100W cables do exist but rarer than 60W.

If you get a 10W cable it will sometimes work at 60W with luck.

Yes two fo them were fully rated to 100W. The support materials even said they had to be 45W or more.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083ZMVM87/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was really careful on this. I am thinking of buying the Anker again in the hope it was just a defective charger. I just wanted to see if there is anything anyone can see that I missed. I love the charger. Just want it to work.

What’s the laptop model exactly?

I’m seeing your cable and it’s looking old, not USB PD. If your laptop is not USB PD then obviously a PD charger won’t work, from anyone.

It is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", Mid 2015) 2.2Ghz quad core i7 running Catalina. Does that help?

I’m looking up it’s charging type.

Right that answers it.

Your laptop is Magsafe2, not USB PD so no charger will work from anyone other than the exact charger.

The mistake you made was seeing USB C port and incorrectly thought it was PD and the charger sent PD protocol, didn’t get reply back as PD so stopped working. Every charger from everyone will fail.

I believe my OEM charger is a MagSafe 2 running at 85W

So a USB-C to MagSafe-2 cable won’t work? Is the USB-C socket in the Anker not a standard USB-C socket?

sorry just read your full response. That is very helpful. Thank you.

Magsafe2 is not USB PD.

You are very good. Thank you very much.
