New Laptop

I think I scored a good deal on a new laptop.

Dell Inspiron 15.6" Laptop, Intel Core i7 i7-7700HQ, 3.8 GHZ, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 Graphic Card, 16GB DDR4 Memory, 1TB HD + 128GB SSD, i7577

grabbed it for $999
has 4k, thunderbolt, GTX 1060. Good reviews on most sites

ordered another 16gb stick of memory to jam in it

I have a 5 year old XPS 12 that quite honestly is good for web browsing and was great for school type stuff but i tried to edit some gopro video and forget it… This one wont be nearly as portable but i want to edit some video and play some games on it

thoughts?

If you brought it then I feel bad for you, reason being is its overpriced for what you get. For starters that graphics card is mediocre for gaming, but worse because for the price you paid you could hae gothen a higher graphics card

What? That’s pretty much the going price for a laptop with a GTX 1060 and it has 16 GB DDR4 memory.

Yeah, i agree with the others, if you’re going to cash out and go all in on a laptop, go all in.

i personally love the XPS line, slim and powerful

but then again, you can build a nice desktop with that budget as well, but since you needed a laptop, then yeah, i would have spent more and get maybe an XPS or somethin

dont feel bad for me, show me a laptop with better specs for cheaper than $999,
minimum gtx 1060 and a 4k display

and a 1060 is hardly mediocre for casual gaming.

(from https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/nvidia-1050-vs-1060)

the xps lines are $1300 with a gtx 1050 which pales in comparison to the 1060

Sorry I’m a month late to this thread, but I’ve been doing a lot of research on laptops recently for an upgrade and I found that the Inspiron series is one of the best bang for your buck for laptops under $1,000. The 4k screen, 16G ram, and GTX 1060 is definitely worth the $1000. Other laptop manufacturers would probably charge closer to $1500 for similar specs.

Regarding to @elmo41683’s point, I think 1060 is in middle of the pack if you consider it from an enthusiast’s standpoint. For the average user, 1060 is more than enough. So it is enough for @bill_rae as he’s just using it for school, video, and a bit of gaming.

I ultimately went with the 2018 Xiaomi 13", which weights 1.3kg, has a MX150 and a Kaby Lake R CPU, but I would’ve definitely went with what you had if I were looking for a portable workstation replacement.

I’m pretty happy with it. Its bulky tho.
Played Sea of Thieves for a few hours last night on max res and detail.
It also worked great for making a 7 day time lapse video from 60k+ pics.
I did upgrade the memory to 32gb though
