iPad to nebula capsule 2 link help

Hi,

We have a nebula capsule 2, that works beautifully screen sharing from an ipad when both are on WiFi. We bought it with the intention of taking it camping with us, but how on earth do we link it without WiFi?

We have tried Bluetooth with no luck, we have purchased an ipad to HDMI cable, and the recommended HDMI to HDMI cable, and we get a sign saying ‘no HDMI signal’.

My tech understanding has now run out.

We can create a hotspot with a mobile/cell phone and connect both to that, but that uses data and isn’t ideal while abroad. Please could someone help?

Thanks, Sarah.

Does that Nebula really need a WIFI?
If not, it seems there is something wrong with that cable connection.
I would ask the support. I am sure they can help.
Or may be there are other Nebula user showing up later.
Good luck!

@Sarahmyers1 From your description are you using a 3rd party cable or an iPad to HDMI adapter, if the later is it a genuine Apple version? Often signal issues are due to Apple’s locked down ecosystem not playing well with 3rd party hardware adapters/cables.

You won’t be able to project via BT, only using WIFI or with a HDMI direct connection. I would suggest trying to use your cable/adapter with HDMI against a TV to see if any signal is being sent, that way you are ruling out if the issue is with your cables/adapter/setup or the Nebula Capsule itself.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help. We’ve ordered an apple brand dongle to go from the ipad to the hdmi cable, and we will see if that helps. Thanks again, Sarah.

@ndalby has given already an excellent reply.

If you create a WiFi hotspot on your phone, it does not use your data. But I get your point that forces the phone to not use Wi-fi but data.

It uses data if the contents you are sharing is not stored physically inside your phone. The same with a correct cable.

Some folks traveling carry a portable router and setup their own network in a hotel so both media on phone and apps streaming off WiFi on phone can screen mirror.

But a really good method is to download media like MP4 to storage and use that on phone or USB stick on projector.

Thank you so much. ABout the WiFi hotspot, if you happen to know- would it use data if we are using films stored on an ipad to play on the nebula, using the phone WiFi hotspot to link them? We can’t work out whether it being downloaded onto an ipad and streaming on the hotspot via the phone would use data? (Not nebula related, thank you in any way, whether you can help or not). Sarah.

Thank you so much for your help. We’ve ordered a proper apple connector to the hdmi to see if that helps. Thanks again, Sarah.

Often such “cable” combinations dont work.
I am sure that genuine cable will do, Sarah.
I would store some films on a simple stick and watch these.
But the best would be to concentrate on other things when on vacations.

I’ve recently had to do similar for a family members setup for when they were going on holiday, if you use your iPhone as a hotspot it will not use your data allowance for content playback that is stored on the iPad.

The only time your data will be used is if you need connection to the Internet such as for metadata (ID3 tags) or if an Apple Store movie needs to check with the license server.

Thank you. That answers this exactly.

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice. The apple branded hdmi link works exactly as you all suggested it would. Problem sorted! Thank you again. Sarah.
