#Galaxy S20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max Test Comparison
Certainly will!
True. Mobile payment also only really got mainstream when Apple released Apple Pay.
This exactly what I do. Unless I see technical problems or the phone is not durable (let’s say the battery drains too quick) I will not go for an upgrade. I used go for the flagship but since the last time, I started to evaluate how much I get use of $1000 phone and I cannot justify the expense.
I’m still an Apple user, but the next time I upgrade I may go with 1 or 2 previous generations that way the cost is lower and the tech inside is still not that old.
I may even consider switching to Android but unsure at this time.
Data?
Sure it wasn’t Samsung Pay?
I love Samsung Pay
I haven’t found (*) any decent reports, on uptake of Apple vs Samsung vs Google mobile contactless payment systems, to know for sure how each grew, but I distinctly remember a period when there was Samsung pay working broadly and not yet Apple nor Google. So I feel it was probably Samsung who helped champion the idea.
As Android is about 2/3rds of the mobile market, I would not be surprised if Google Pay isn’t by now the most commonly used, probably Apple 2nd and Samsung 3rd.
** There is one report I found but its not free, and from the summary it seems highly country specific.
Well, there’s a little of anecdote in my impression. Here in Canada, at least, where we had contactless credit cards for a while - meaning that virtually every retailer was already ready for payments via smartphones. Only a few banks provided the service - less than the “Big 5”, the five major banks in Canada - so even if you had a phone capable of doing it, you would have to also be a client of one of the few banks offering the service. As a result you wouldn’t see many people putting their smartphones to the machine to pay for stuff. Then Apple released Apple Pay, and within a week all Big 5 claimed they would support it, followed shortly after by most banks. Shortly after the new iPhone was in the streets, you could see people paying with their phones a lot more - iPhones and others.
But that story, as amusing as it is, is no data, I must agree. So here’s some - not from Canada, but still valid:
Check the data on the very last part of this infographic:
Apple Pay has more users than Samsung Pay - even if there are more Samsung phones than iPhones.
Check the number of countries where Samsung Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted. Apple Pay is almost double Samsung Pay, that alone gives a clue about who could make it mainstream.
Again, according to the table in the article, Apple Pay has more than double the usage of Samsung Pay
If you are in the US, you might not have had the same impression - as I remember, it took a while for even credit card contactless payments to be a thing there, let alone upgrade all machines to accept smartphone contactless payments.
I personally feel Apple pay is very useful application of iPhone, very handy and helpful.
using Apple Pay for almost 90% of times when I am out shopping, have reduced number of credit cards in my wallet from 6 to 1 …
Contactless payment is less prevalent in US than Europe (and Canada, apparently ) so in California for example it was only Trader Joe’s I shopped in took it.
In UK everywhere takes contactless, many places have no minimum and so I hold my Wear OS watch to the terminal and it works in 90% of places. There is 30ukp limit but that’s ample for most shops.
But I have 3 LTE devices and 3 smartwatches and in one combination of use I am carrying my 8.4" phone in a big pocket / bag and interact just with my watch and BT buds til I am stationary.
I still carry the credit cards I use the most in my wallet, but I’ve been in some cases - going out of work to buy lunch nearby, for instance - where I forgot my wallet, and Apple Pay saved me. I only use the physical credit/debit card in the rare case the machine won’t accetpt contactless payments. I even have all my rewards cards in my phone - and those I definitely took out of the wallet - so I can pay and get the rewards without ever touching my wallet. There has been talks about getting our public transit card - which has been contactless for a while here in Montreal - in our phones as well. I’ve ben honestly dreaming of it.
Still, anytime the transaction on the machine takes a little longer, this is how I feel:
Last I remember, even credit/debit cards with chips - the ones you “plug” into the machine instead of swiping - were kind of rare in the US. I honestly don’t remember ever having to swipe a card here up North - and, in fact, most places block the swiping side so clients won’t even try it, for security reasons.
Almost of all places I shop - Costco, Target, Safeway, Starbucks (Starbucks rewards card / rewards pay), Walmart (Walmart Pay), CVS, Walgreens, Local Produce stores accept touch-less payments – these are Apple Pay or respective store wallet or something on same lines…
Most of my transactions are online - Amazon, BestBuy, Target … so no cards only numbers
Only use the credit card for the Gas Stations (Costco is installing touchless payment thouhh, Apple Pay might come in future) and some one-off places such as
Never used Apple pay but I think Samsung pay is superior since it can use NFC and MST, so even if the card reader doesn’t accept Google/Samsung/Apple pay, there is a 99% chance Samsung pay will still work, at least on my experience
Yes that’s my impression also. Samsung was first and best, Google worst and Apple in middle.
I paired my Fossil Gen 5 with my Huawei 8.4" phone and my Anker buds and it’s a good total system noting the price of all three items about half of an iPhone price. The watch does reliable Google Pay.
Apple Pay was the one to get the market rolling, getting retailers to start getting the contactless pay introduced… or at least giving a much needed push.
I can only talk for iPhone now since I am pretty much an iPhone user (not sure till when) also got a S9 and liking it so far… may be switch sometime in future… keeping options open.
Anybody got Applecard yet?
I got it the same week it was launched
You are correct. Currently, Apple Pay leads Google Pay and Samsung Pay by a huge margin.
I have both Apple Pay and Google Pay. I use Apple Pay 99% of the time and Google Pay only 1% of the time (only when Apple Pay doesn’t work for some reason and the vendor happens to also take Google Pay). When I started using mobile pay, Apple Pay was accepted at so many more places that I frequented that I stopped trying to use my Pixel for mobile payment. Also, the vending machines at my school only takes Apple Pay.
It is country specific. Apple has greater handheld market share in USA for a start.
So obviously mobile contactless payments will be more to iOS in USA stats.
The quality of data seems poor, either old or indirect.
I suspect feeding factors are Apple Watch is technically superior to Wear OS, the USA worse competition on cellular with more contract phones masking iPhone higher costs.
For US, the number of devices is partly the reason. Also Apple Pay is accepted at more locations than Google/Samsung Pay.
NOTE: In China, the 3 combined (Google, Samsung, Apple) don’t even add up to 10%. It is nearly 100% WeChat Pay & AliPay.
