Cold weather makes outages even worse. During Texas’s 2021 power outage, millions lost power, leading to 210 deaths, according to the National Institute of Health.

At risk populations like the elderly and those with medical conditions were unable to access warmth or medical assistance during this time.

Increased wildfires and energy demand also make power outages a concern in the summer.

A record-breaking heatwave in June 2021 triggered rolling blackouts across the Pacific Northwest. Without access to air conditioning, 159 people died according to a report by Vox.
