Is PowerPort Solar Waterproof?

I have an Anker PowerPort Solar 15W that I take on kayaking trips. I sit it on the deck of the boat, and water will sometimes drip from my paddle onto the panels and run down into the sides. So I bought a clear waterproof map case to place it in – kind of like a big Ziploc – but now I wonder if that bag is heating up like an oven, with a chance of overheating and cooking the panels.

I’m planning to paddle the length of the Mississippi, which takes three months, and I don’t want to constantly worry that I may ruin it.

Any insights, advice?

Very short answer - No. Per the user manual, PowerPort Solar should not be exposed to liquids, that includes water.

Try to keep it away from water, and any drops.

Also, avoid extreme temperatures.

I too have one and try to avoid any exposure to water, but in case there is a slight water drop, have wiped it, no issues there.

You can make up your own mind🙂

Generally solar panels perform better the cooler you keep them meaning they wouldn’t preform at 100% in the water proof bag not to mention you will be blocking out a significant amount of solar rays. You should be fine as long as you don’t submerg the panal and dry it out before charging.

Well, shoot!

Thank you both for the info.

But while I’ve got you here, is there one that’s more durable, that can take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’?

I think the Anker will give you the best performance and is the cheaper option and is higher wattage. Not to mention you already own a 15 watt Anker

@GoofyChickens how about that video, pretty impressive huh? I would never think that these panels would be able to take such a beating.

I was very impressed by the video. :hugs: There’s hope!

Anker plans to bring new models later this year or so. The only model available seems to be the Anker 21W Dual USB Solar Charger

Element321, I’ll be posting my progress on the “Kayak and Canoe Camping” Facebook group. I haven’t done homework yet on cell reception along the river, but I’m thinking I may post once a week to every two weeks. I’m sooooo excited about it!

I’ve been told the river is up very high this year. I’m familiar with the Mississippi section we have a fishing camp near Natchez (it sits over 20 ft off the ground and the water is close to flooding the trailer this was about a month ago). That waters are crowded with barges and other large boats. I’ve also read several reports of large snakes in the back waters.

Be careful and have fun!

I’ve been watching it this year. It’s been terrible! I’m shooting for late 2020.

Good luck! I hope we have a better year next year. The south along the river have been nailed so many times this year…
