The Race begins…

Dad/Grandpa story
A couple of weeks ago I visited an area where my Mom and Dad used to live, it was community where they went to retire. I decided to go for a walk with my son to show him the pitch and putt golf course where his Grandpa used to volunteer his time using his carpentry skills to repair anything that needed it. We walked over a bridge crossing a creek and My son said “hey Dad, Grandpa’s name is on the bridge” I walked over and sure enough he was honored with a plaque for all his volunteering at the course and the community center.

I was so proud at that moment as he never told me about the honor and they had moved away from there 10 years ago. He used to also volunteer DJ at the community center and he donated his stereo and speakers to the center when they moved away.

In good conditions a 1Lb solar charger makes about 2A/hour, so a charged powerbank of similar weight at about 20Ah is about the same weight as 10 hours of good sunshine. So then do the math on your devices, duration of trip. Typically it ends up a few days is better powerbank but for sure > week solar wins. Few people go on longer off-grid trips so the solar advantage applies to a minority. Solar in recent years has improved better than powerbanks so the needle is currently swinging pro-solar but any move to hydrogen cells will shift it the other way. As most of our devices have a minimum voltage threshold, it is more useful for a group to use a collective large solar panel than many smaller ones.

A bit of both for diversity is prudent.

Yea, what @mmengel770 said, a person can’t win twice, so hopefully!

Finally some words of wisdom

This is a very good explanation - My goal was to get off the grid in everyday life, so the solar investment made sense on a daily basis - it’s not just for backpacking trips, etc. But you do need a good place to leave your array so it can collect all day. I recommend a power bank and a solar array - charge the power bank during the day and power devices with it at night.

So how are people going to celebrate Father’s Day? Out with friends or family? Or staying home and barbecuing with friends or family?
