Apple is killing the charging plug on its highest-end phones by 2021?

You might not believe I have NO!!! even such an antique one.
My wife got a brand new one (USB-C etc.)
If there are calls to be made in vacations she hands it over to me!

And here at home we have a fixed network by telekom which we use for internet also.
May be in the far, far future we will get glass fibre connection here .
Some part of the city got, not we.

Such a bull … here in Munich : an unimportant tiny, lousy city here I Germany.
But I will not talk about, I have to care about my blood pressure!
politics!

This would be one way to drive up sales for all of the wireless charging/accessories that would by forced upon people to switch to. I can see it happening because most people are not buying new phones every year so Apple has to come up with others ways to supplement cash flow.

Seeing as how I do wireless charging, I guess this is okay. However, I do have some headphones I love that are wired. So, I am kind of on the fence with this.

Certainly an interesting concept. They better include AirPods in the box If they do this.

I was going to share this earlier but didnt have the time.

Its interesting. That means they will have to include a wireless charging pad and maybe the airpods. This will raise the price even more.

I think they need to do USB-c so users can still access their files or they need to work on speeding up wireless file transfer

Apple will keep only the top tier product completely Portless , and that price, throw a Airpod and Wireless charging pad for $1300+ it’s not a big deal… and there are buyers.

They will test the market and then plan for Lightning to USB-C / complete portless series of iPhones.

Also may include some restrictions for high speed Charging… to extract more money from other Giants like Anker

Probably proprietary wireless technology/standard that is good for data transfer and charging. Apple will forget Qi since they can make money on licensing

And lose their dongle revenue? The audio jack was removed for water resistance and additional space for the lower speaker. This time there’s no upside, but if anyone can sell the removal of features as cool, it’s Apple.

It’s one of those rumors that I’ll believe when I see it. That being said, I’m an iPhone + Windows laptop guy, so I still use iTunes to organize & sync my music library and to back-up my phone, so if they get rid of the plug, I may have to finally move in to the 21st century as far as all of that is concerned.

I feel like better water proofing is pretty obvious. With no ports you should be able to keep it in 15m of water indefinitely like many watches.

Indeed!
Although my iPhone is 4mtr waterproof, but I still avoid fluids at all costs :joy:

Connectivity can still be important for recovery. I’m sure they have repair tools that require a physical connection of some sort. I don’t see the plug going away any time soon.

I think it is far more likely they move to USB-C and give up on the proprietary cable nonsense.

Apple is already doing it with Apple Watch with complete wirless, so just matter of time… I use the wires only and only while I am on commute.

This also brings back old question which keeps coming back… Powerbanks with Wireless charging. Hope Anker @AnkerOfficial does this Sooner than later and capture the market

Then you need a power bank that can also hold the phone in place, like a magnet or grip. Otherwise it becomes hard to keep it charging when on the go.

The power loss charging with a battery also matters more, much less efficient wirelessly so you get fewer charges.

I still remember macs before USB was a standard, and it was a real pain to get compatible peripherals. But when they jumped on USB, they did it thoroughly. We’ll see how they manage this transition - I think we can all agree that the lightning cable made sense for the time, but much less now.

Yeah, before USB-C was a thing lightning was a logical decision. Apple should have switched as soon as USB-C was released

But then, Apple cannot make any money out of licensing and royalty with usb-c

People say that, but Apple still could. They could require the same MFI certification just for USB-C cables.

This is going to upset a lot of people and will mess up the whole USB-C market…

Wouldn’t it sound crazy if the cables read “USB-C” Cables for iPhones and again second set of cables like USB-C cables for Smartphones :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Doesn’t it sound like Apple though lol

Unless there’s a massive change to the infrastructure where wireless charging devices are located in bars/restaurants/transport etc or the implementation of li-fi charging globally I can’t see them want to remove the cable (lightning or future edition)
