Can my A8334 be used to power a MAC USB superdrive

I have a 6 month old MacBook pro. I am trying to use my anger A8334 usb-c hub to use a several year old usb superdrive with my computer. I get an error message on my mac saying the drive needs power. I thought power was supposed to flow to the drive through the hub?

Any help is appreciated

According to Apple support article HT2801 (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2801), Apple Superdrive can only be plugged into USB ports on selected Apple computers, but not recommend to plug to a USB hub. Below is the extract:

The SuperDrive is designed exclusively for use with MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini’s that do not have a built-in optical drive. The SuperDrive must be directly plugged into the computer’s USB port, and cannot be used if connected to a USB hub.
