Reviews online say that it doesn’t automatically reconnect bluetooth. So you have to manually reconnect each time. Is this true? Seems like a great product otherwise.

That’s correct.
I’ve had the Wakey for a while now and you do need to press the Bluetooth button on the Wakey and select it in your Bluetooth menu (iOS).
